The H.S.C. Examination is held in
four groups, namely Science, Commerce, Humanities and Home Economics,
while D.P.E. Examination is held for the subject of Physical Education
only. This board also held the examinations of P.T.C. & C.T. The
Board holds two examinations every year for HSC, one is the Annual
Examination and the other is the Supplementary Examination which is
held after two months of declaration of the result of Annual
Examinations. The Board is responsible for conducting the H.S.C.
Examination of special students.
Presently 1,52,595 students have
appeared in HSC Examinations in 2000. Out of these 55,641 students are
in Science Group, 38370 in Commerce Group, 54597 in Humanities Group,
1141 in Home Economics Group, 43 Diploma Physical Education, 1467 in
PTC and 1336 in CT Examination.
The Board awards in all 80
scholarships @ Rs. 250 per month for a period of two years, 15 for
Science Group (Pre-Engineering), 15 for Science Group (Pre-Medical)
students, 15 for Commerce Group students, 15 for Humanities Group
(Regular), 15 for Humanities (Private), 03 for Home Economics Group
students and 2 for Diploma in Physical Education students. Apart from
merit scholarships, the Board has been awarding President's Talent
Scholarships to 10 Science students of Intermediate stage who agree to
pursue Basic Science Courses throughout their educational career to
become research scholars instead of joining any professional college
after passing the HSC Examinations since 1983. Beside the said
scholarship, the Board also award Gold-Medal to the holders of the 1st
position, Silver Medals to 2nd Position and Bronze Medals to 3rd
Position holders in each group at any of its examinations and Merit
Certificates to the holders of upto 15th position. These awards are
given in a ceremony in which parents of the meritorious students,
officers of Education Department, Board and Principals of Colleges
participate.
At the time of independence there
were only four colleges in Karachi which were affiliated with the
Bombay University. Six new colleges were opened by the end of 1949 and
all the ten colleges were affiliated with the University of Karachi,
established in 1950. IN 1962, when the joint Board of Intermediate and
Secondary Education was established, 23 colleges were functioning and
this figure increased to 89 Govt. Sector and 39 in Private
Sector till 1998-99.
The Inspection and affiliation of
colleges and Higher Secondary Schools is a regular function of the
Board. When the Board started functioning independently, 51 Govt.
Colleges were affiliated with it. Some of these colleges also run Arts
and Commerce classes in the afternoon and evening shifts. By including
the evenings colleges this figure goes up to 89 by the end of 1998-99.
During 1991 to 1992 many Education
Societies from the Private Sector have opened private colleges/Higher
Secondary Classes in their schools. Up-till-now 48 new colleges have
been recognized. Out of these newly opened recognized colleges 30 are
for boys and 18 for girls, 59 secondary schools added higher secondary
classes in their schools, (41 boys and 18 girls). Many of these have
offered their students various group of subjects. To sum up, the total
number of colleges and higher secondary schools presently affiliated
with this Board (Government + Nationalized + Private + Afternoon +
Evening Shift Colleges) are 196.

In the addition to the normal
statistical work the research section conducts studies in all the
sphere of educational phenomena such as Socio-Economic factors on
academic performance, teacher student relationship, the effect of
physical facilities in the colleges on the performance of teacher and
student. The studies are conducted and provision can be made to
elevate the standard of education.
In 1982, construction of a building
for a reference library was started with the premises of the Board and
it was completed with furniture and fixtures in January 1983, Now this
library has about 10,000 books on various subjects such as Islamiat,
Science, History, Text Books for Intermediate Level Dictionaries and
Encyclopedias.
At present the reading room of the library is open to the students
from 9:00 AM to 7:30 PM.
In the field of Co-Curricular
activities the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi organizes Inter
Collegiate Qirat, Naat Khawani, Debates, Quiz, National Songs,
Paintings, Photography, Calligraphy Art and Craft and Essay
Competitions every year.
The Board also organize a function
of Eid-Milad-un-Nabi. Where the students of all the male and female
colleges take part and award prizes on their performances. The best
students are sent for Inter Board Competitions organized by the Inter
Board Committee of Chairmen, Pakistan Science Foundation etc.
To promote the science culture among
the students of the colleges a Science Forum was established in the
Board in July 1997 Prof. Arif Razvi is the founder Governor and Mr.
Muhammad Rafique is founder Co-ordinator of this forum.
The aim and objectives of this forum
are projection of the science and technology among the students and
public. Arrangements of science exhibitions, Debates and Lectures on
Scientific topics, Essay competitions, Seminars and Science Quiz etc.
This Forum has organized four
science exhibitions, science Quiz and Lectures of famous scientist
till to date. An Inter Collegiate Science Olympiad has been organized
in June-September 2000.
A Science museum is also being
established in the board to preserve the best selected projects of
science exhibitions for the improvement of knowledge of the Science
students and Public.
The sports section of the Board had
been instrumental in breeding sports men of national and Olympic level
in all the fields. |
